Prop design 202

In this prop design course, we will be drawing prop design, think of this like set and prop design for live-action. Props are an important element of the animated film process. Props are not something that most novice character artists immediately consider but they need the same thought and care that go into character design.

What role do props play in animation?

Set designers are like character designers. Take a look at this prop job description. Prop artwork must fit in well with the whole look and style of the film. Props must read as their intended purpose and even convey a sense of design without overpowering the characters. Sometimes props are like characters themselves like the sword of Excalibur! The sword is more than just a sword it is the magical sword of King Arthur and must look like it! Prop creation can be lots of fun!  This is similar to a set and prop design and decor artist on a theater production.

Other times props need to look simple and generic so they don’t confuse the focus or direction of the film. Although designing props is not as glamorous as characters it is still an important part of the animated film. In other words, take your time and make your props look good! Props design does not have to be boring! It is true that you will draw everyday things like a chair or a bed, but you also get to draw fun magical elements too!

 Prerequisites

Character designers often draw their own props. Sometimes in large productions, there will be a separate job for a prop artist. Many character designers start off with designing chairs, swords, and other noncharacter elements.  In order to design really great props, you should be familiar with concepts like character design and have a strong drawing background with subjects like still life. it is also recommended that you use a Wacom or iPad for more efficient prop design course production!

Before taking Prop design make sure you have taken the still life classes as well as character design classes.
